'Jingu' Original Artwork

'Jingu' Original Artwork

Amy Ho

Female Samurai 'Jingu'

This piece is named after Empress Jingu who is believed to be the first onna bugeisha (woman warrior) to jointly reign alongside her husband Emperor Chuai from 170 -260 A.D. Her husbands aim was to defeat and take over Korea. He died before he could do so but Empress Jingu vowed to complete his mission, although very heavily pregnant at the time. She prayed to the spirits that her baby would wait to be born back in Japan and sure enough following her successful conquering of a section of Korea, she gave birth to a son, the future Emperor Ojin. Legend has it that Empress Jingu lived to be 100 years old and died of natural causes.
