Fine Art Limited Edition Print of Female Samurai 'Yamamoto'
This piece is named after the famous Yamamoto Yaeko (1845-1932) who was a female warrior that bravely defended the castle of Aizu-Wakamatsu when it came under attack by imperial forces in 1868. Her father died trying to defend this castle and her brother was taken prisoner. She moved to Kyoto to take care of him after he had been tortured. It was here that Yamamoto converted to Christianity following her marriage to a Japanese missionary and founded the Doshisha University in Kyoto, one of Japans most prestigious universities.
